Wilds Director Reveals Challenges of Introducing Exciting Weapon Types to Monster Hunter

Monster Hunter Wilds introduces new creatures like wyverns, toad monsters, and arachnids to the fantasy world of beast hunting. While the game offers a range of fancier-looking weapons with tweaked movesets, the core lineup remains familiar to long-time players. Most of these weapons harken back to the classic Monster Hunter Freedom 2 on the PSP from 2007.

Over the years, Capcom has added a few innovations like the Insect Glaive from Monster Hunter 4. However, according to Wilds director Yuya Tokuda, the focus has been on enhancing and rebalancing existing weapons rather than introducing entirely new playstyles.

“When we develop games like World and Wilds, we always consider the possibility of adding a new weapon type,” Tokuda explained. “While it’s not ruled out, we prioritize refining the current arsenal to ensure each weapon feels unique and balanced.”

The game currently features 14 categories of weapons, ranging from the powerful Greatsword to the intricate Hunting Horn. Tokuda expressed the challenge of introducing a 15th weapon that offers a distinct playstyle without overlapping with existing options.

“It’s a delicate balance,” he noted. “With each title, we strive to evolve existing weapons with new combos and mechanics to keep the gameplay fresh. This constant refinement takes time and resources, making it more beneficial to enhance the existing lineup.”

In the case of Wilds, Capcom also faced the dilemma of incorporating elements from Monster Hunter: World’s Iceborne expansion, which catered to experienced players seeking advanced challenges.

While the idea of new weaponry may not be a top priority for Monster Hunter enthusiasts, the concept of expanding and refining the game’s arsenal remains intriguing. Unlike other games, Monster Hunter’s weapons are crafted from the creatures players hunt, adding a unique twist to each weapon’s design.

One can’t help but ponder if Capcom’s monster design teams could create unconventional creatures that defy traditional weapon crafting. Imagine a wyvern made of balloons, an insect monster composed of nested triangles, or a slender dinosaur only visible from the side. The challenge for blacksmiths to craft weapons from such eccentric creatures would truly test their skills.
