DreamWorks recently showcased a first look at Shrek 5, prompting various reactions from fans. Some fans noted that the art style for Shrek and his family seemed a bit off, especially in Shrek’s character design. Interestingly, the official Sonic the Hedgehog movie TikTok account had a clever response to this observation.
Many fans may remember the initial design of Sonic the Hedgehog in the movie, which received significant criticism. However, after a redesign process, the Sonic movie franchise has now achieved great success, surpassing one billion dollars in revenue.
In a TikTok video, the Sonic account humorously advised “any green ogres looking for advice,” showcasing the evolution from the old Sonic model to the improved version. The caption “Take notes!” accompanied the video.
Shrek 5 will feature the return of the main cast, including Mike Myers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, and Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona. Zendaya joins the cast as Shrek and Fiona’s daughter, Felicia. The movie is set to hit theaters in December 2026.
While Shrek’s redesign for Shrek 5 is apparent in the comparison image below, DreamWorks has yet to disclose details about their design choices for the upcoming film.
Shrek 5 marks the first new addition to the Shrek series since 2010’s Shrek Forever After. The franchise began in 2001, with sequels in 2004 and 2007. Holiday specials such as Shrek the Halls and Scared Shrekless also emerged. Notably, Shrek 2 remains the top-grossing film in the series, generating over $930 million globally. Collectively, the four main films have earned more than $3 billion.
The success of the Shrek series led to the 2011 spin-off Puss in Boots and its sequel in 2022. Additionally, video game adaptations have been created, with the latest official Shrek game being Shrek Swamp Tycoon on Roblox in 2024.
Beyond the film and gaming realms, the Shrek franchise has become a meme sensation and even boosted the band Smash Mouth’s popularity with their song “All Star.” Universal Orlando’s DreamWorks land features a dedicated Shrek section, while Shrek merchandise remains highly sought after by fans.
