Sony has surprised PS3 users with a new update focusing on system performance. The update, version 4.92, requires 200MB of free space on the hard drive and emphasizes the renewal of the Blu-ray player encryption key for continued disc playback. This marks the first update for the PS3 in over a year, following version 4.91 released in February 2024.
The PS3, originally launched in 2006, will soon celebrate its 19th anniversary, having sold over 87 million units worldwide. In comparison, the PS2 recently marked its 25th anniversary, while the latest PS5 update in January mainly focused on stability improvements. Sony also removed the 30th-anniversary PS5 themes, hinting at a potential return in the future.
