Former Capcom and Platinum Games director Hideki Kamiya has expressed his desire to have another opportunity to create Scalebound, the canceled Xbox game.
At his new studio, Clovers, Kamiya shared a video where he reminisces about Scalebound while being surrounded by his staff. He discusses the game’s shooting mechanics and unique elements, such as the protagonist, Drew, wearing headphones and carrying a smartphone in a world filled with dragons. Kamiya also draws parallels between Scalebound and the popular isekai genre, where a character from the real world is transported into a fantasy realm, similar to Forspoken.
Although the video posted on Clovers’ Twitter account does not explicitly show Kamiya stating his desire to work on Scalebound again, he confirmed his intentions by retweeting the post and tagging Xbox boss Phil Spencer, expressing his readiness to revive the project with a simple, “Let’s do it, Phil!”
Originally planned for release on Xbox One and PC, Scalebound was canceled in January 2017. Despite the setback, Kamiya has consistently expressed his wish to bring the game back in some form. While there were discussions between Platinum Games and Microsoft about the revival, Spencer indicated that they have since moved on from the project.
Currently, Clovers is in the process of developing a sequel to Okami in collaboration with Capcom, the IP rights holder. Given that Microsoft retains the rights to Scalebound, there remains a possibility for its revival. However, it is uncertain whether Microsoft would collaborate with Platinum Games, from which Kamiya has departed, or choose to work directly with Kamiya at Clovers, considering he was the original director of the game.
