The Mobile World Conference in Barcelona has begun, showcasing numerous new tech innovations from various companies. Among these reveals, Samsung’s division presented an intriguing concept for the future of portable game consoles. They envision using foldable-screen technology to make bulky game consoles more portable by folding them up for easier transportation.
Samsung Display, a branch of the company specializing in screen technology for other devices, displayed a Switch-like device at MWC in Barcelona. This demonstration highlighted how a console could be made more compact simply by folding it in half. While there are potential concerns related to foldable devices, such as screen creases after multiple folds, the concept design offers an exciting glimpse into potential future developments.
Although current devices like the Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and the upcoming Switch 2 do not feature foldable screens, these companies may consider adopting this technology in future hardware releases. In the meantime, investing in a carrying case remains the best option for transporting portable game consoles. Alternatively, retro devices like the Game Boy, Nintendo DS, or PlayDate offer more pocket-friendly designs.
Furthermore, modern smartphones serve as capable gaming devices, with Asus even offering a model specifically designed for mobile gaming. Coupled with accessories like a Backbone cradle, it is possible to create a gaming experience on a smartphone that closely resembles a console setup.
