EA Releases Full Source Code for Classic Command & Conquer Games
Electronic Arts (EA) has made a significant contribution to the gaming community by releasing the full source code for several classic Command & Conquer games under the General Public License. This release includes the original Command & Conquer (also known as Tiberian Dawn), Command & Conquer: Red Alert, Command & Conquer Renegade, Command & Conquer Generals, and the Generals’ Zero Hour expansion.
Collaboration with the Modding Community
This initiative was spearheaded by EA in collaboration with Luke “CCHyper” Feenan, a prominent modder and community figure. Feenan, who previously assisted in bringing the C&C Ultimate Collection to Steam in March 2024, played a critical role in restoring the source codes of these iconic games.
Enhanced Support for Custom Maps
In addition to releasing the source codes, EA is enhancing the modding experience by adding Steam Workshop support for several games including Renegade, Generals, Zero Hour, Command & Conquer Tiberium Wars, Kane’s Wrath, Red Alert 3, its Uprising expansion, and Command & Conquer 4 Tiberian Twilight. Updated mission editor and world builder tools now allow users to publish their custom maps directly to the Workshop. According to Feenan, subscribing to items on the Steam Workshop will automatically integrate the content into the game, making new maps available in the singleplayer/multiplayer map selection menus.
Comprehensive Modding Support Pack
EA has also released a C&C Modding Support pack that includes source XML, Schema, Script, Shader, and Map files for all games utilizing the old SAGE engine developed by original series developer Westwood.
This release marks an excellent opportunity for fans and modders to revisit and reimagine the classic strategy games that have defined a genre.
